Practical 4

Designing Game Machine Challenge

For this practical session, we were tasked to make a game out of cardboard and use the basic joineries that we learnt from the previous practical in 2 hours. At the end of the practical, we were to present about our game, do voting amongst group for the game we think is the best and make a 30 seconds promotional video which will be shown to primary school students.

Before going for the practical, we first discussed as a group about what game we were going to make. We decided to make a Plinko board game. We felt that it looked doable within the time limit and enjoyable for the kids to play hence it was chosen. After deciding on the game, we came up with the dimensions for the game.

Which are:
length of top (not bottom)= 35
width of top=24
long rectangle side= 24
short rectangle side= 19
bottom length= 10
bottom width= 24
diameter of circle of cylinder= 5
diameter of circle cut for cylinder= 6
(all measurements are in cm)
There were some dimensions that we had to come up on the spot during the practical hence it is not included above.

Our plan was to divide into 2 groups to make the game. Xin Ni and Jun Lin were in charge of making the basic foundation of the game while Ashwati and Katrina were in charge of making the mechanism, design of the game and the details on the top of the game.

In our game, we also used a handful of joineries. Flanges, L-braces and tabs were used to support and reinforce the walls of the game so that it would not break easily. Gussets were used as support on the base of the game and it also helped elevate the game for smooth running game. Additionally we also used scoring to make the mechanisms of the game which needed cylinders.

Some difficulties we faced were:
1. Having not enough time as it was our first time making such a big game hence there was a lot of trial and errors.
2. Due to the rise in Covid-19 cases, there were heightened measures during practical which sometimes make it difficult to communicate with each other.
3. With the heightened measures, it was really difficult to be efficient especially when the process of making our game was like building blocks where the top piece can only be added when the base of the game is completed. Therefore there was a lot of waiting involved as we could not work on it together.

In the end, we were tied with another group for second place with a total of 8 votes. The results were shocking as we thought our game was lacking. At the same time, it felt very rewarding as it was difficult to make the game.

How to play the game:
This game requires two people to play. Each person gets a ball shooter. The main aim of the game is to get the most points in one minute. The ball will be pushed from the cylinder launcher and if the ball rolls down to any of the lanes, you will get the respective scoring points of 10-90-70-60-50-20. This may seem easy but if the ball were to fall into any of the 3 red holes at the top, the player scores zero points. Additionally, the shooters are difficult to control and use if the right strength is not used. This was also one of the challenges we came up with to make the game more difficult. If too much strength is used, the rubber bands used for the shooter may come out. Fixing it will take a few seconds which allows the other player to gain a lead in the game. But if too little strength is used, the ball may not go far.
