Practical 2
Pre-practical
1. What is an air lift pump? How does it work?
An air-lift pump is a device that lifts water from a lower surface such as a well or a sump through the injection of compressed air directly into the water inside of a discharge pipe at a point below the water level in the well.
In air-lift pumps, compressed air is mixed with water. Its working principle lies on the buoyancy of air-water mixture which is more than buoyant than water without air. When compressed air is introduced, a mixture of air and water is formed on the longer length of the U-shaped tube. Thus, the air-water mixture is forced upward until it discharges over the top of the U-shaped tube.
2. Making of an air lift pump
1) Measure and mark 5cm from the base of the U-shaped tube.
2) Cut a hole in the 5cm mark.
3) Insert connector and air-line pipe from the air-lift pump to the U-shaped tube.
4) Insert the attached air-line pipe with the U-shaped tube inside the water tank filled to the brim.
5) Switch on the air-lift pump and place plastic cup to the discharge of the U-shaped tube for collection.
6) Repeat steps 1-5 by measuring, marking and cutting a hole of 10cm from base of the U-shaped tube.
i) Materials Used
The materials used are air-lift pump, air-line pipe, water tank, U-shaped tube, screwdriver, penknife, paper cup as shown from the pictures below.
To make the hole, we first marked out 5cm from the base of the U-shaped tube. Then, we used the penknife and screwdriver to cut the hole as shown in the pictures below.
After the hole was cut, we attached the connector to connect the U-shape tube with the air line pipe.
